Northumberland, also known by its ancient name of Northumbria, is largely rural with rugged mountainous landscapes to the west and north, which includes the Northumberland National Park, Hadrian's Wall and the Kielder Forest Park. It is the least populated county in England, but has had considerable growth in tourism due to its scenic beauty and its historical Past. Northumbria has 80 miles of mostly sandy coast line from Blyth to Berwick Upon Tweed. There are few large centres of population and these are mainly in the south and east of the county. The larger towns are, Blyth, Morpeth, Alnwick, Hexham, Corbridge, Haltwhistle and Berwick Upon Tweed. Northumberland is the heart of the ancient Kingdom of Northumbria, once the cultural centre of Europe, which stretched from the Humber to the Firth of Forth and controlled the whole of the Northern half of the British Isles and was the most powerful Kingdom until its destruction by the Danes in 867.

In Northumbria the main routes are the A1 which passes Morpeth, Alnwick and Lindisfarn Island to Berwick Upon Tweed on the Scottish border. The A189 runs from Blyth to Alnwick and the main east/west routes is the A69 which runs parallel to Hadrian's Wall and links Corbridge, Hexham and Haltwhistle.
